As per the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth of around 21 miles at approximately 8 a.m. local time, which is equivalent to 8 p.m. Tuesday Eastern Time. On the east coast of the island, approximately 11 miles to the south-southwest of Hualien City, it was located.

Taiwan city of Taipei — The National Fire Agency of Taiwan provided an update on Wednesday at nine o’clock Eastern time (9 o’clock local time), stating that the number of fatalities has not changed and that there have been 963 people injured.
According to the organization, there were at least 143 people who were still trapped, the majority of them were located in a highway tunnel and two rock quarries. Additionally, the agency stated that all of the individuals who were known to have been trapped in structures have been extracted. An individual who was rescued from the debris was found to be among the deceased, according to the agency.

There were 76 aftershocks registered in Taiwan in the less than five hours that followed the earthquake, with some of them reaching a magnitude of 6.4. Over three hundred thousand households were left without power, and commuters were left stranded as a result of the suspension of operations on the island’s high-speed train system and metro lines. Aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 6.5 to 7.0 are expected to occur within the next three to four days, according to Wu Chien-fu, who is the director of the Seismology Center at the Central Weather Administration.
